Singha Lager
Posted: 1 March 2015  Beer Republic 5.0
Singha Lager from Thailand Is it good? I can think of plenty of countries where the signature brews are putrid. Singha isn't one of them. In the scheme of things, it's probably an average industrial brew that will neither make you weep nor cheer.
Avg price/liter: USD 3.43   ABV %: 5.0  Type: lager  Thailand beer

Singha is brewed  by Thailand's oldest brewery, Boon Rawd, since 1933, and founded by Boonrawd Srethabutra, largely as a reaction to breweries sprouting up in the rest of Southeast Asia at the time.   Prior to the 1990's, Singha remained unchallenged for the Thai beer throne and was about the only beer you could find.

Despite Chang Classic Lager posing a serious challenge in the new millennium. , Singha is still Thailand's most famous beer, exported abroad and now produced in Europe under license in two factories, one in Germany, one in Russia.

I first tried in the late 1980's when Thai restaurants in the United States were catching on, and I liked its distinctive bubbly taste with spicy food.  I still do, and it remains my preferred beer of choice on a hot day in Thailand.  Its available everywhere, it's economical, and it fits the climate..

Is it good? I can think of plenty of countries where the signature brews are putrid.  Singha isn't one of them.  In the scheme of things, it's probably an average industrial brew that will neither make you weep nor cheer.  Foreign Thai residents either love it or hate it.   For those of you in foreign lands, it's probably best sipped with a pad thai and a girl in a bikini.
