Hitachino Pale Ale
Posted: 22 March 2015  Beer Republic 7.0
Hitachino Pale Ale from Japan Hitachino calls this one of the best pale ales in Japan. Is it? I don't know. I haven't tried any other pale ales from Japan.   it didn't taste like a pale ale. It was so gosh darned hoppy, I thought I was drinking an IPA.  This isn't as bad as John Travolta in Battlefield Earth, but this isn't Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday either.
Avg price/liter: USD 17.85   ABV %: 5.5  Type: Pale Ale

Hitachino, the sake brewery which added craft brews to its repertoire after Japan liberalized brewing laws in 1996, never ceases to surprise.  An innocent sip of a Hitachino for the first time in November led to me ordering whatever bottles I could obtain from a wholesaler here in Thailand.

Hitachino calls this one of the best pale ales in Japan.  Is it?  I don't know.  I haven't tried any other pale ales from Japan.  But I have tried a lot of pale ales.  Hitachino claims this is a English brew all the way.  Traditional brewing methods.   English hops.  English malt.

Don't get me wrong.  This wasn't a loser.  But it didn't taste like a pale ale.  It was so gosh darned hoppy, I thought I was drinking an IPA.   At only 5.5%, it tasted A LOT stronger, and that isn't a compliment.

Hitachino sets the bar high with its beers.  Their Pale Ale doesn't meet the standards they've set elsewhere. This isn't as bad as John Travolta in Battlefield Earth, but this isn't Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday either.
