Hitachino XH
Posted: 23 March 2015  Beer Republic 9.0
Hitachino XH from Japan Hitachino says the XH stands for Extra High. To my knowledge though, there's no marijuana added to the brew.  This a fine tasting brew¬†and Hitachino goes the extra mile (or kilometers in Japan) to incorporate a Japanese quality to the mix.
Avg price/liter: USD 17.85   ABV %: 8.0  Type: Ale

Hitachino's XH has the company returning to form with another one of their unorthodox beers.

XH's claim to uniqueness is that this is a strong Belgian brown ale made with extra hops and extra malts.  Hitachino says the XH stands for Extra High.  To my knowledge though, there's no marijuana added to the brew.

I wasn't expecting much from a brew bragging about its extra strength   Most of the beers I've tried outside the dubbel and tripel category just taste like alcohol with a beer taste in the background.  Not with XH.   This a fine tasting brew and Hitachino goes the extra mile (or kilometers in Japan) to incorporate a Japanese quality to the mix.  The beer is matured in distilled sake barrels -- easy to find around this brewery's premises since it started out and still brews sakes  -- and then later further matured for another three months in shochu casks.

Shouchu, a uniquely Japanese beverage standing midway between wine and whisky in the alcohol department, originating in western Japan on the island of Kyushu, has enjoyed a boom in the twenty first century, and Hitachino blurs the lines in the techniques used to produce this Japanese specialty and beer.

A great way to get high.
