Baird Suruga Bay Imperial IPA

Baird Suruga Imperial IPA from Japan If you only had 24 hours to visit Japan, Suruga Bay seems like a good bet. If you can only try one Baird beer, get the Surugu Bay Imperial IPA.
Avg price/liter: USD 16.80   ABV %: 7.5  Type: IPA

Suruga Bay is probably a very beautiful place.  On the Pacific coast of the main island of Japan, Mount Fuji can be seen from the middle of the bay.  There are submarine canyons, sandy beaches, small pink shrimp.

And now an IPA named after it.  Baird Beer's Suruga Bay Imperial IPA.

Don't get hypnotized by the Imperial.  Imperial in a title (such as imperial stout) just means it's higher in alcohol and calories.

I've made it pretty clear what I like and what I don't like about the Japanese beers from Baird.   I believe they're well crafted and use only natural ingredients.  But the resultant flavors in their brews don't come out and assault you in a unique way, and I find the naturally carbonated water taste to dominate over the beer's flavors.

The Suruga Bay Imperial IPA has a stronger flavor than Baird's other offerings. Baird says they drop hop the beer twice, twice with whole flower cones. Before packaging the beer, they add back measured amounts of actively fermenting beer to condition the beer for further carbonation. This is called krausening, and I suspect Baird does it with all their beers

If you only had 24 hours to visit Japan, Suruga Bay seems like a good bet. If you can only try one Baird beer, get the Surugu Bay Imperial IPA.
