Hitachino Red Rice Ale

Hitachino Red Rice Ale from Japan This is a pale ale style brewed extra strong and combines the brewery's original knowledge of sake making. Two different yeasts are used. A typical ale yeast, like any other ale, and a sake yeast  You can't go wrong with this one. How many times in your beer-drinking life will you have an opportunity to try a sake-like beer, produced by sake masters?

Hitachino's signature brew from Japan, the beer which put them on the map in the United States back in the early 2000's, finally arrived on my doorstep.

There was a lot of hype on this one.  My friend in New York City bought this upon my recommendation and slurped it up like heaven's nectar, urging me to follow suit.  I would have been a hypocrite if I hadn't bought it when it showed up in stock from an online beer retailer.

This is a pale ale style brewed extra strong and combines the brewery's original knowledge of sake making.  Two different yeasts are used.  A typical ale yeast, like any other ale, and a sake yeast to convert the rice sugars into alcohol.  The usual ale yeasts can't do that kind of conversion.

I was expecting something a bit sweeter and a bit subtler from this Japanese beer.  The Red Rice Ale was more bitter and less sweet than expectations.

You can't go wrong with this one though. How many times in your beer-drinking life will you have an opportunity to try a sake-like beer, produced by sake masters? Probably never. Turn that never into a seldom by picking up a bottle and broadening your beer horizons.
