Hitachino White Ale
Posted: 22 April 2015  Beer Republic 8.0
Hitachino White Ale from Japan The Japanese are great mimics. I thought if anyone could out-Belgian a Belgian, it'd be a Japanese brewer. And indeed, this Hitachino White Ale tasted better than the legitimate Belgian wheat from Belgium one of the other guys at the table ordered. Craving a white, you'll do right with this one.
Avg price/liter: USD 17.85   ABV %: 5.5  Type: Belgian Wheat

The first time I ever tried Hitachino's White Ale, I was sitting in one of Bangkok's newly founded craft beer bars with a few friends.  One of the friend's former girlfriends wanted me to recommend a beer and so I chose this, a Belgian style ale but brewed in Japan.

The Japanese are great mimics.  I thought if anyone could out-Belgian a Belgian, it'd be a Japanese brewer.  And indeed, this Hitachino White Ale tasted better than the legitimate Belgian wheat from Belgium one of the other guys at the table ordered.

There are the usual ingredients you'd expect in a Belgian wheat.  You know what I'm talking about.   The coriander, the the orange peel.  Hitachino adds orange juice and nutmeg to the mix.

Hitachino claims this ale has won gold medals at beer competitions in the US and in the UK.  What beer hasn't nowadays?  If I urinate into a cup and ferment that with yeast, someone will give me a gold medal for that.  You don't need any certification but the Beer Republic's own.  Craving a white, you'll do right with this one.
