Mikkeller 19
Posted: 24 April 2015  Beer Republic 8.0
Mikkeller19 from Denmark Mikkeller's 19 is a very simple concept. The brewery is already brewing 19 different types of single hop IPA's. Why not just blend them all together and call the beer 19?  But come on. You're not going to be able to subtly taste each of the different hops that go into this.

Mikkeller's 19 is a very simple concept.  The brewery is already brewing 19 different types of single hop IPA's.  Why not just blend them all together and call the beer 19?

Almost 16% of this beer is composed of the Citra Imperial IPA I reviewed earlier. Over half of 19 is composed of the Simcoe, Citra, Amarillo, and Sorachi Ace hops IPA's.  Some varieties like Williamette and Galena don't even comprise 1% of this bottle.  These differences are due to the varying bitterness from one hop variety to another.  Mikkeller brews each of its single hop IPA's with the same bitterness.  Williamette and Galena are more bitter, and so require less hops in the brew.

This is more of an academic brew.  You ask yourself intellectually how a beer with 19 different types of hops would taste, and 19 provides the answer.  But come on.  You're not going to be able to subtly taste each of the different hops that go into this.  If I added 19 different types of sugar or chili to recipe, could you seriously differentiate each one in the final recipe?

You drink 19 because it exists.
