Mikkeller Nelson Imperial IPA
Posted: 30 April 2015  Beer Republic 8.5
Mikkeller Nelson Imperial IPA from Denmark I've sampled A LOT of strong beers, and what I've noticed is that most of these beers taste like their strength, which is not a compliment. Mikkeller's Nelson Imperial IPA is different. At almost 9% ABV, both my wife and I agreed that the drops flowed smoothly down the esophagus. Let's get smashed!!!!!
Avg price/liter: USD 21.18   ABV %: 8.9  Type: IPA

You learn a lot when you drink weird brews with weird sounding names, like the Nelson Imperial IPA.

Nelson is not some British historical figure who loved strongly alcoholic drinks.  With Mikkeller beers, you have to do your own research -- the bottle tells you diddly.    The Nelson refers to the Nelson Sauvin hops used to make this IPA, a strain of hops developed and grown in New Zealand and named after the sauvignon blanc grape.

And an imperial IPA is an extremely hoppy, high alcohol strong ale, pushed recently by American microbrews to a public lusting after something bigger.  I guess this was to be expected.  We want bigger TV sets, bigger cell phones, and now, IPA's with a bigger and bolder taste.

By this point, I've sampled A LOT of strong beers, and what I've noticed is that most of these beers taste like their strength, which is not a compliment.  Mikkeller's Nelson Imperial IPA is different.  At almost 9% ABV, both my wife and I agreed that the drops flowed smoothly down the esophagus.

If you're not being charged a premium to order this one and you like IPA's, you're making the right decision.  The alcohol punch is like drinking two regular IPA's!  Let's get smashed!!!!!
