Gypsy Inc Soft Focus
Posted: 20 May 2015  Beer Republic 7.5
Gypsy Inc Soft Focus from Denmark Soft Focus is a wheat ale made with Amarillo and Tettnanger hops.  Gypsy Inc says the hops add aromas of citrus and elderflowers.  Whatever.  I never drank an elderflower before.   It most closely tasted like a very flavorful German wheat beer,
Avg price/liter: USD 9.60   ABV %: 4.7  Type:  Ale

Who is Gypsy Inc?  I never heard of them?  Have you?

Answer:  Gypsy Inc is a beer collective.  What does that mean?  A resurgence of the Soviet Union but in the arena of beers?  I'll break it down easy.   Do you remember the Traveling Wilburys from the late 1980's?  This was a band composed of musical legends.  Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne.  They recorded two albums before fading away after 1990.  You could call the Traveling Wilbury's a musical collective -- five individual recording artists uniting together to create something new and market it under a new name.

The Wilburys created a fictitious backstory.  Looks like Gypsy Inc has, too, depending upon how you read it.  All descriptions of Gypsy Inc say the collective is already responsible for over 600 commercially launched beers.  That could either mean Gypsy Inc has, itself, released over 600 commercially beers (which no one has ever heard of, but which sounds impressive nonetheless) or that the individual beer enterprises which comprise Gypsy Inc, in total, have released 600 brews.  That is possible given that Mikkeller is one of the entities.  Mikkeller releases a new beer while the rest of us take a break for dinner.  Brewdog is another member.

The gypsy part of the name, I take it, comes from the gypsy brewing philosophy of Mikkeller, possibly some of the other members (but not Brewdog, which owns its own facilities), and could be the way Gypsy Inc intends to operate.  To recapitulate, a gypsy brewery is like a virtual brewery.  The gypsy brewer contracts sends a recipe to an existent brewer who then brews the beer on behalf of the gypsy and then bills the gypsy for it.  Some of Gypsy Inc's offerings are brewed at Brewdog's facilities in Scotland.

Soft Focus is a wheat ale made with Amarillo and Tettnanger hops, this one brewed in Belgium by one of Mikkeller's mainstay breweries.    Gypsy Inc says it's a great beer for a day at the beach.  Yeah, if you can buy the beer there.  If you have to bring it to the beach yourself and don't have an adequate cooler, the beer would quickly lose its perfection.

Soft Focus is fruity.  Gypsy Inc says the hops add aromas of citrus and elderflowers.  Whatever.  I never drank an elderflower before.   It most closely tasted like a very flavorful German wheat beer, not so surprising given that this is classified as a wheat ale.

Soft Focus is a fair bit cheaper than a similar Mikkeller brew and not so different from something Mikkeller would put out, so if you're a big fan already of the overhyped beer legend, Soft Focus is a way to get in on the Mikkeller tastes on the cheap.
