Estrella Damm
Posted: 7 July 2015  Beer Republic 3.0
Estrella Damm from Spain Estrella Damm is described as an American adjunct lager style. The American adjunct lager style is, you might say, the anti-German Purity Law.  You're supposed to add rice and corn fillers to an American adjunct lager. This is not Damm at its finest. It helps to know that Damm is actually capable of brewing really good beers when it wants to and that the Estrella Damm is 'bad' merely because it was adhering to a certain type of style.
Avg price/liter: USD 5.36   ABV %: 5.2  Type: Lager

If I'd bothered to do my research more thoroughly, I should have known that Estella Damm is Damm's signature brew, the one Damm beer someone is bound to have tried if they've ever heard of Damm.   Damm loves to show the Estrella off.  "We have three reserves of yeast that are stored under the highest security: in Barcelona, Valencia, and London."  Yeah, an overweight security guard lies sleeping in front an unlocked room.

Estrella Damm is described as an American adjunct lager style.  I didn't fully comprehend until I sipped this that American adjunct lager actually is a style.  I just thought Budweiser and Miller were sh-tty beers.  Now I get that they were brewed to be sh-tty.

The American adjunct lager style is, you might say, the anti-German Purity Law.  You're supposed to add rice and corn fillers to an American adjunct lager. It's cheaper but it also changes the taste.  Coors, Bud, and Bud Lite aren't the three bestselling American beers just on price.  Consumers must also enjoy the American adjunct lager style.

Estrella Damm isn't as watery as a Coors or a Bud. Brewed since 1876, it's unlikely August Kuentzmann Damm would have ever sampled an American-brewed Budweiser before crafting the recipe for Estrella Damm. Beers like Estrella Damm were the progenitors of the beer style which came to dominate America at the end of the 19th century.

This is not Damm at its finest. It helps to know that Damm is actually capable of brewing really good beers when it wants to and that the Estrella Damm is 'bad' merely because it was adhering to a certain type of style.  In the scheme of things, Estrella Dam is probably a good version of a bad beer.

And for that, I'll thank my lucky estrellas.
