Primator India Pale Ale
Posted: 23 July 2015  Beer Republic 7.0
Primator India Pale Ale from Czech Republic Primator's India Pale Ale is bitter and floral.  Four types of malts and seven kids of hops are used, each added at a different stage in the brewing. A tasty Central European interpretation of a non-Central European beer.
Avg price/liter: USD 5.88   ABV %: 6.5  Type: IPA

Depending on how you want to look at them, Primator is both an 'ancient' brewery and a new craft brewery in the Czech Republic.  To keep it simple, I'd say for general marketing purposes and to be able to boast "Since 1873 ...", they're old.  For export purposes and to maintain cred in the craft beer community, they're a new craft brewery.

1871 was when the town council in Nachod proposed building a brewery, and 1873 was when the first batch of beer was brewed. Though it was in the 2000's that Primator as it's known today took shape.  The brewery was renovated, the graphic design labels were redone, and the brewery was sold to the LIF Group.  It was probably this stab at internationalization of the enterprise that finally put Primator on some kind of map outside the European Union such that I was able to get these brews onto my taste buds.

Primator's India Pale Ale is bitter and floral.  Four types of malts and seven kids of hops are used, each added at a different stage in the brewing.   Lately, I've been drinking so many IPA's that the tastes begin drifting into each other.  Primator's IPA stood out as bold and unique.  And for now, it's more competitively priced than other Czech imports.

A tasty Central European interpretation of a non-Central European beer.
