Review: Lervig Johnny Low
Lervig Johnny Low
Posted: 27 July 2015
So when I saw Johnny Low, Lervig's session IPA at only 2.5%
ABV, the ultra low alcohol content caught my eye. Johnny
Low uses Cascade, Simcoe, and Citra hops in abundance, and
though low on alcohol, you'd never notice it in the taste.
Avg price/liter: USD 9.82
ABV %: 2.5
Lervig is a Stavanger, Norway
brewery that marches to the beat of its own drum.
While everyone else is out there trying to brew beers with
6%, 8%, 12% alcohols to show off strength, Lervig continues
along brewing beers in the under 5% range.
I am sick, sick, sick of
strong beers, and most of the time, all you do is taste the
strength. So when I saw Johnny Low, Lervig's
session IPA at only 2.5% ABV, the ultra low alcohol content
caught my eye. This alcohol content is so low, it can
be sold in Scandinavian grocery stores. [Higher
alcohol beers must be regulated by state alcohol monopolies]
There are many theories where
this beer got its name. Johnny's last name must refer
to the low alcohol content. The first name, Johnny,
probably is layered with meanings. The pic on the
label shows a sailor with a goofy face. As this is an
IPA, I'll assume this is a British sailor on one of the
boats bringing the first IPA's to India. Another
possible suggestion for Johnny is that British sailors back
then likely shunned condoms (known in the British vernacular
as "johnnies"). Johnny was a lowly educated bloke
who caught STD's in India from not wearing johnnies,
provoked to reckless behavior from drinking too many IPA's
with too high an alcohol content. Lervig could
subsequently argue that this light IPA encourages
responsible behavior for all future Johnny's.
Johnny Low uses Cascade,
Simcoe, and Citra hops in abundance, and though low on
alcohol, you'd never notice it in the taste.
Johnny Low is a great way to
pose as a rebel without really being one. I knew guys
in high school who stupidly impregnated girls for not being
careful. Were they drunk at the time? You'll
stay completely sober when you pop open your own bottles of Johnny Low.
