Nippon Craft Beer Kagua Rouge
Posted: 13 August 2015  Beer Republic 8.0
Nippon Craft Beer Kagua Rouge from Japan Kagua Rouge, in the red bottle, brings on the sansho and roasted malts. This is a beer neither too sweet nor too bitter.  And considering an alcohol content of 9%, well balanced in the alcohol department, too.   Kagua Rouge is worth the investment if you're lucky enough to come across it.
Avg price/liter: USD 19.71   ABV %: 9.0  Type: Ale

What do you do when you're throwing a dinner party of tacos for a few friends?  Well, you definitely procure some 100% agave tequila, some limes, triple sec, simple syrup, and when in Thailand, mangos, too, for mango margaritas.  You also order some Japanese beers like Kagua!

Nippon Craft Beer, the manufacturers of Kagua, are a virtual brewery.  They come up with the recipes and handle all the sales, but contract out to a brewery in Belgium to handle the actual brewing.  To date, they only make two brews:  Kagua Blanc and Kagua Rouge.

Nippon Craft's big shtick is to add Japanese herbs (like yuzu and sansho) to their brews.  This unique addition is what sets them apart when they go about trying to pitch Japanese restaurants worldwide to carry the beer.

Kagua Rouge, in the red bottle, brings on the sansho and roasted malts.  Nippon Craft Beer claims the sweetness of the malt balances out the hop bitterness.  Normally, these taster/web site notes are the equivalent of bulls--t, but they hold true here.  This is a beer neither too sweet nor too bitter.  And considering an alcohol content of 9%, well balanced in the alcohol department, too.  You won't be cognizant you're drinking a beer almost as strong as some wines.

Nippon Craft Beer is aiming for a narrow niche, not trying to brew all the styles every other craft brewery is. Kagua Rouge is worth the investment if you're lucky enough to come across it.  Do you really need to have another Kirin or Asahi with your sushi?
