Chapeau Lemon

Chapeau Lemon from Belgium It's hard to hate Chapeau Lemon.  It's also hard to love it. Under the circumstances, Chapeau Lemon isn't bad.  It can come off as overly sour on a first sip, at risk of preserving the natural fruit flavor. A success or a failure?  I'd say that's right in between.

It's hard to hate Chapeau Lemon.  It's also hard to love it.

Lemon or lime in a beer is a tricky thing.  These citrus fruits are renowned for their tart taste. When you consume a product with their of these fruits -- lemonade, key lime pie, iced tea, lemon meringue pie -- they're always sweetened.

And so, I imagine, is Chapeau Lemon lambic beer to some degree. But not too much.  The problem when you sweeten a lemon beverage too much is that it takes like an artificially flavored soda or a s--tty Damm Lemon.

So don't sweeten enough, no one can drink it.  Sweeten it too much and connoisseurs paying the big bucks for an import won't buy it or drink it.

And then, we're talking about a lemon lambic here.  Lambics are naturally sour.  So we take a sour fruit and add it to an already sour drink.  Not an easy drink to execute.

Under the circumstances, Chapeau Lemon isn't bad.  It can come off as overly sour on a first sip, at risk of preserving the natural fruit flavor.  By the last drop, you nod your head and say, "Hmmm.  That was really unusual," but you don't consider buying it again.

A success or a failure?  I'd say that's right in between.
