Floris Chocolat
Posted: 31 August 2015  Beer Republic 2.5
Floris Chocolat from Belgium What I was hoping for was the Floris Belgian wheat beer with rich background notes of cacao beans.  Instead, what I got was an overly sweet chocolate-flavored alcoholic beverage along the lines of what one would expect from the beverage cooler of cheap multinational drinks at a 7 11.  Floris Chocolat is best left unsipped.
Avg price/liter: USD 9.70   ABV %: 4.2  Type: Lambic-Fruit  Belgium

Chocolate in a beer?  Who'd ever imagine doing this?  You already know the answer.   Floris would.

I have seen chocolate added to beers before.  Mikkeller added chocolate to their Mexas Ranger, but in that beer, the chocolate was but one ingredient in what was otherwise known as a chipotle porter.  Floris goes further and based an entire beer around chocolate.

What I was hoping for was the Floris Belgian wheat beer with rich background notes of cacao beans.  Instead, what I got was an overly sweet chocolate-flavored alcoholic beverage along the lines of what one would expect from the beverage cooler of cheap multinational drinks at a 7 11.  At least Mikkeller had the sense to keep the chocolate unsweetened and in the background.

Floris must be filling some niche offering their flavored fruit beers, and for the demographic they're hitting, a sweet chocolate beer  is probably just what everyone in that demographic is panting for.  For the demographic that's serious about beer, Floris Chocolat is best left unsipped.
