Tempt No 9 Strawberry & Lime Cider
Posted: 31 August 2015  Beer Republic 3.5
Tempt No 9 Strawberry & Lime Cider from Denmark I have a secret, too. But it ain't so secret now that I'm writing it here. Tempt No 9 Strawberry & Lime Cider really does stink. It's comparable to an oversweetened wine cooler beverage you'd find at a 7 11. This should be your ninth choice when you have a half a dozen other ciders to choose from.
Avg price/liter: USD 4.43   ABV %: 4.5  Type: Cider  Denmark

There is an old idiom which states that the further away you go, the more of an expert you're perceived. In other words, the less others know about you, the more you can embellish any details you care to share.   We don't have to be talking a person.  We could be talking about something as innocent as a beer -- or a cider.

I'd never heard of Tempt Cider.  The name didn't attract me.  Nor its country of manufacture (Denmark); I'd actually assumed Tempt was another Belgian operator.  Tempt was on a list of all the ciders that are currently imported into Thailand, and one of my objectives is to check each untried beer or cider off that list and decide whether or not I like it.

As I've poked into Tempt's origins -- note:  after I've tried it -- I become less impressed than I was after I sipped this Strawberry & Lime Cider.   What I came across were people raving about how well Tempt was designed. Not its taste. Tempt was written up as a Danish brand designed by DDB Denmark, a worldwide advertising agency. Another site sung praises as to how DDB and Royal Unibrew (the actual manufacturers) created Tempt together.

No beating around the bush. Everything about Tempt is designed around its marketing. There is a small keyhole on the backside label of the bottles. There, you can read their 'hidden' message: "I have a secret." At Tempt's web site, you can read and post your own secrets.

I have a secret, too. But it ain't so secret now that I'm writing it here. Tempt No 9 Strawberry & Lime Cider really does stink. It's comparable to an oversweetened wine cooler beverage you'd find at a 7 11. I think I know where the number 9 comes from in its title. This should be your ninth choice when you have a half a dozen other ciders to choose from.

Because most of what I order comes from craft breweries, I just assumed Royal Unibrew, the "genius" behind Tempt, was, too. No, actually Royal Unibrew is a publicly traded company in Denmark and distributes Heineken and Pepsi and other brands up there.

That Royal Unibrew isn't small and cuddly doesn't automatically make its products subpar.  The Cascade Brewery Company in Tasmania makes some excellent Mercury Ciders, superior, in fact, to craft ciders I tried elsewhere in Australia, and Cascade is now currently owned by the behemoth known as SAB Miller.  Key difference:  SAB Miller didn't brainstorm Mercury or Cascade's other products.  Cascade got bought out by the giants much later.

If you like nice looking bottles and sugary phrases like "Tempt Cider is made for the curious" and devour artificially tasting limes and strawberries, Tempt No 9 Strawberry & Lime Cider is calling for your lips.  If you actually want to drink a good cider, you've come to the wrong place.
