Magners Pear Cider
Posted: 6 October 2015  Beer Republic 5.5
Magners Pear Cider from Ireland To give you an idea about the quality, this is not a cider you pop open for a special occasion like an anniversary. No. Magners Pear Cider is the drink you take out of the refrigerator just before a pre-prepared dinner from the supermarket or before watching an average movie on your Blu-ray.
Avg price/liter: USD 5.63   ABV %: 4.5 Type: Cider

If you ever set a task for yourself to sample as many ciders as you can, you'll inevitably cross paths with Magners. Magners is one of the giants in the cider market and has done a great job exporting their product all over the world. Originally started by an Irishman named William Magner in Clonmet, South Tipperary, Ireland in 1935, the cidery was sold just a decade later to an English cider-maker company H.P. Bulmer.

The ciders continue to be sold under the Bulmer brand name in Ireland  Outside Ireland, due to some ancient negotiation made when Billy Magner sold out his remaining shares to the larger Bulmer operation, Bulmer reserves the right internationally to use the Bulmer brand name for its own English-made products. So the brand name Magners was born in 1999 to stamp the product as Irish-made.

When the euro was strong, the C & C Group which now owns the brand pulled in over $1 billion in revenues annually.  The revenue are still admirable but no longer over $1 billion with the falling euro.  No one would be ashamed to be making profits of over €100 million a year.

The traditional English name for pear cider is perry.  As Magners is an export-only brand name destined for not just the UK, but the rest of the European Union, Australia, Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand, pear cider is the moniker used on the bottle.

Magners Pear Cider is slightly sweet but not overly so. It has an even carbonation and a refreshing taste for its price range.  To give you an idea about the quality, this is not a cider you pop open for a special occasion like an anniversary.  If your spouse has any idea about Magners, s/he'd give your face a reprimanding slap.  No.  Magners Pear Cider is the drink you take out of the refrigerator just before a pre-prepared dinner from the supermarket or before watching an average movie on your Blu-ray.

You won't be disappointed, but you won't be enlightened.
