Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter from Australia If you don't know what a porter is, think of this as a Temptress Chocolate Stout.  In the mood for a chocolate fix but don't want an extra 500 calories after eating a 100 gram bar? Reach for a Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter in a 330 ml bottle instead.
Avg price/liter: USD 8.07   ABV %: 5.0  Type: Porter

Holgate is, I just found out recently, the elder statesman of the Australian craft brewery world.  The beer is exported a lot more than I expected it to be.   It's difficult to grasp such things when you haven't lived in Australia for the last 15 year, a bit like my wife showing me a picture online of a famous Korean movie starlet I've never heard of and wouldn't know if I crossed paths with the in the street.  To me, the starlet is just another pretty Korean woman and Holgate is just another Australian craft beer.

Their mascot, a horned bull, that lends a cute and comical look to their bottled brews is a nice touch.  Most breweries don't have them.  And most of the breweries whose beers I've sampled on the Beer Republic aren't as consistent as Holgate with making well above average beer for every variety in their line-up.

Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter, as it now tastes, was re-invented by Holgate in 2008 after their new American senior brewer came on board.  Dutch cocoa and vanilla beans plus seven different malts are brewed to create this drink Holgates hopes is very tempting to your wallet.

Porters and stouts are two different drinks, just as pale ales and IPA's are, but with today's experimental craft brewers coming up with funky recipes, the distinction isn't so great.  If you don't know what a porter is, think of this as a Temptress Chocolate Stout.

My wife never had a porter before, but she is a Guinness lover. Stouts don't scare her. And while I can't say Holgate Temptress tempted her intimately with this brew, she commented how much she enjoyed it and reached for the botle to finish it.

In the mood for a chocolate fix but don't want an extra 500 calories after eating a 100 gram bar? Reach for a Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter in a 330 ml bottle instead.
