Holgate ESB
Posted: 3 November 2015  Beer Republic 6.0
Holgate ESB from Australia Holgate ESB is an acceptable bitter by any definition and it's priced right.  What's not to get excited about?  Holgate says their ESB is your new best friend you invite home for a round of snooker and darts.  Befriend the ESB if you're lonely and desperate for a new (platonic) friend.
Avg price/liter: USD 8.07   ABV %: 5.0  Type: Bitter

Paul Holgate, one of the granddaddies of the Australian craft beer movement, runs a small hotel and brewery less than an hour outside Melbourne.   Holgate ESB, which stands for Extra Special Bitter, is one of the two original beers Holgate brewed upon its inception in 1999.  Holgate claims the ESB is their most awarded beer.

The Holgate ESB is made with English crystal and roast malts, East Kent Goldings hops, and dry hopped with Aussie Galaxy hops. Australians seem to treasure a product more if it's made with both imported and Australian ingredients.

I have not traditionally been a fan of bitters but have come around, over time, as I've sipped craft beer after craft beer that may as well have been brewed only with hops.  Holgate ESB is an acceptable bitter by any definition and it's priced right.  What's not to get excited about?

Except just the night before, I got to ride the Starship out of Italy. Holgate says their ESB is your new best friend you invite home for a round of snooker and darts.  If we accept that, then the Starship is the beautiful Italian glamour queen you invite home to take directly upstairs.

So which is it? Snooker and darts with the new buddy or the bedroom with the Italian fashionista? The sexy Italian accent had you from the word "the".  Befriend the ESB if you're lonely and desperate for a new (platonic) friend.
