Van Honsebrouck Kasteel Tripel
Posted: 3 November 2015  Beer Republic 5.5
Van Honsebrouck Kasteel Tripel from Belgium Van Honsebrouck likes to call this a fruity beer, packed with more Belgian hops than ever before, with malt, clove, and flowery tastes.  As a beer though, the balance Kasteel boasts of on its own web site is elusive.  If I wanted that lack of subtlety, I could drink Carlsberg Elephant Beer for a lot less cash.
Avg price/liter: USD 14.97   ABV %: 11.0  Type: Tripel

Kasteel Tripel used to be the Kasteel Blond   Van Honsebrouck likes to call this a fruity beer, packed with more Belgian hops than ever before, with malt, clove, and flowery tastes.

Van Honsebrouck does have a point.  As I sipped away, I imagined I was drinking a wine instead, much like the Kasteel Donker.   When you start thinking of this as sort of a champagne beer, you might actually appreciate it.

As a beer though, the balance Kasteel boasts of on its own web site is elusive.  The "subtle aroma with touches of fruit" is trampled by the ever present taste of the 11% alcohol.

You won't get silently drunk on this one.  You'll be well aware of every drop as it goes down. If I wanted that lack of subtlety, I could drink Carlsberg Elephant Beer for a lot less cash.   Kasteel can brag how great it is.  So can an ugly prostitute.  Does the mere saying make you want to pick either up?

Angelo Poretti Tre Luppoli from Italy -- 4.8% alcohol by volume
Federbrau Lager from Thailand -- 4.7% alcohol by volume
