Birrificio L'Olmaia Starship
Posted: 3 November 2015  Beer Republic 6.5
Birrificio L'Olmaia Starship from Italy Birrificio L'Olmaia named this one after the aircraft that flew the rock band Led Zeppelin around during their 1973 and 1975 North American concert tours. Starship is L'Olmaia's take on an English style bitter, using British hops and malts. It's a big improvement on the average bitter you'd get in an English pub circa 1988, that's for sure.
Avg price/liter: USD 22.61   ABV %: 4.5  Type: Bitter

It's a trip finding out where these breweries come up with the names of their beers. Birrificio L'Olmaia named this one after the aircraft that flew the rock band Led Zeppelin around during their 1973 and 1975 North American concert tours.  The Starship was the first Boeing 720 ever built, used by United Airlines starting in 1960, before being sold onwards to an entertainment company in the early 1970's. The Starship terminated service in 1982 and was dismantled for parts.  All good things come to and end.

My wife and I were out for a Neapolitan pizza over the weekend, arriving at the restaurant mere minutes before it started pouring outside.  She wanted a beer.  It turns out L'Olmaia Starship was the only beer on the menu that 1) I hadn't already sampled since it was not available for online ordering and  2) the restaurant actually had in stock.  We ordered one, licked our lips, and proceeded to order another.

Birrificio L'Olmaia is based in the heart of Chianti wine country. Over the summer, I was probably within 30 minutes of the brewery without knowing it.  The brewery specializes in tasty, refreshing, high quality, and expensive brews.  I thoroughly enjoyed their La 5 and La 9 after paying for them in installments.

Starship is L'Olmaia's take on an English style bitter, using British hops and malts. It's a big improvement on the average bitter you'd get in an English pub circa 1988, that's for sure.

I was not a fan of bitters before, but if the bitters have an Italian accent and the bottle resembles something the crew from Star Trek might sip, you can beam me aboard, Scotty!
