Brothers Strawberry Cider
Posted: 19 November 2015  Beer Republic 6.0
Brothers Strawberry Cider from UK Here's a 'secret' you need to know about Brothers, and it will help you appreciate their ciders a bit more. Brothers is really just a producer of pear cider (perry).  Basically, this is just strawberry infused pear cider. The strawberry here isn't overly sweet or smack of artificial strawberry candy flavor. I drank this after a yoga workout in a humid Bangkok park.  Consume it that way and you'll be fine.
Avg price/liter: USD 6,50   ABV %: 4.0  Type: Cider

Brothers from Somerset.  Master marketers with a great story.  Four brothers teamed up to brew a world class cider in the heart of cider country.

Just bear in mind that is all a story.  There are four brothers.  They do brew ciders in Somerset.  Since 1658 may be a bit exaggerated, but the four brothers' father became a multimillionaire brewing a different brand of cider.  The bros did grow up in the cider business.

I was a bit hard on the brothers.  I slammed them for not being anything close to artisanal.  Forgive me for the act, but over here in Thailand, Brothers and its ilk are all sold as premium European produce, and there isn't much of a difference in price between something horrid like Tempt or something a helluva lot better.  In Europe, the price difference between the two could be more marked.

Here's a 'secret' you need to know about Brothers, and it will help you appreciate their ciders a bit more.  Remember, despite the marketing bluster, Brothers isn't sold as a high end cider and to expect freshly pressed juice in every bottle is probably asking a bit much.  The secret:  Brothers is really just a producer of pear cider (perry).    .

Brothers got its start selling perry at the Glastonbury Festival. People, the story goes, asked where they could buy it, so Brothers started bottling and shipping and retailing.

Their Apple Cider does use real apple juice. That's probably the one variety you can't use perry as a base and flavor with apple and get a true tasting apple cider.   But the Toffee Apple?  Perry with apple juice concentrate.

And so it goes with this Strawberry Cider. It's perry with strawberry juice from concentrate.  Basically, this is just strawberry infused pear cider.

Fresh squeezed juice is always better, but day to day, let's face it.  Most of us drink our juices from concentrate.  And even if these were made with fresh squeezed juices, you wouldn't be drinking them fresh.  You drink the beverage months later after the sugars have fermented, the cider has been bottled, and the stuff has sat on a grocery shelf for so long.

The strawberry here isn't overly sweet or smack of artificial strawberry candy flavor.   Overall though, Brothers ciders are a little on the too sweet side, and the Strawberry Cider doesn't benefit by being one of them.

I drank this after a yoga workout in a humid Bangkok park.  Consume it that way and you'll be fine.  Treat it like a fine wine and you're an idiot.
