Goudon Carolus Tripel
Posted: 26 November 2015  Beer Republic 4.5
Goudon Carolus Tripel from Belgium Het Anker, the brewery behind Gouden Carolus Tripel, claims on their own web site that this beer was chosen as the best tripel beer in the world.  It was hard for me to get past the syrupy alcohol taste this time by imagining I was drinking port wine. I suspect Gouden Carolus is a range to try on site.   If I were in Michelen and eating in their brasserie, a Gouden Carolus Tripel might be just the ticket.
Avg price/liter: USD 9.87   ABV %: 9.0 Type: Tripel

So I am biased against tripels.  Sue me . . . if you can really prove it.

Tripel is not my favorite style because I haven't tried a tripel yet that's blown me away.  The Kasteel Tripel, at 11%, was even stronger, but the alcohol blended better in their own blond ale.  It's possible to call Kasteel Tripel refreshing.   Gouden Carolus?  It was hard for me to get past the syrupy alcohol taste this time by imagining I was drinking port wine.

Het Anker, the brewery behind Gouden Carolus Tripel, claims on their own web site that this beer was chosen as the best tripel beer in the world.  My first instinct is to say that Gouden Carolus chose its own tripel as the best. There is some limited truth to the statement.  It did win two "Best" awards at the World Beer Awards.  Never heard of 'em?  Most people probably haven't.  In 2012, it was selected as the World's Best Belgian Style Tripel Pale Beer.  In 2015, it scored Europe's Best Belgian Style Tripel.  Even if the World Beer Awards meant anything, and they likely don't, the awards aren't for the world's best tripel.   It's for the world's best Belgian style tripel pale ale.

Most beers awards are as meaningless as most film awards.

The story goes that this tripel was originally brewed for the Knights of the Golden Fleece in 1491.  This exact version or the tripel style?  Het Anker doesn't say.  Het Anker has only been around for 5 generations.  They could argue that the 'secret' recipe was passed down since 1491 until Het Anker started brewing it and called it Gouden Carolus Tripel.  I'd believe that story as much as I'd believe this is the world's best.

I suspect Gouden Carolus is a range to try on site.  The operation is a brasserie, brewery, distillery, and hotel all in one. If I were in Michelen and eating in their brasserie, a Gouden Carolus Tripel might be just the ticket.

On a hot humid Thanksgiving evening in Bangkok, Thailand?  Gouden Carolus Tripel definitely won't win an award for world's best exported beer for a Thanksgiving happy hour.
