Aspall Premium Cru
Posted: 28 November 2015  Beer Republic 7.5
Aspall Premium Cru from UK Aspall Premium Cru Cyder is the first cider produced by current operators Barry Chevallier Guild and Henry Chevallier Guild, supposedly 7 years in the making.  The sugary sweetness of lesser ciders was cloying once I downed a bottle of Aspall Premium Cru.  If sweet ciders packed with candied flavors are your game, Premium Cru would be like serving the finest Wagyu beef to a kid content with beef jerky.
Avg price/liter: USD 8.49   ABV %: 7.0 Type: Cider

Aspall just keeps getting better and better.

Most people consume mainstream beers and I would expect the same is true for any product.  Most people get most of their entertainment from mainstream movies and TV; most people, if they read, read today's current bestsellers.  And so, by this logic, I would presume that most of the ciders consumed are the quality you'd get from a Strongbow or a Magners.  These ciders can deceivingly taste refreshing.  Once you stack them up against something better, you recognize the mainstream ciders' shortcomings.

Aspall Premium Cru Cyder is the first cider produced by current operators Barry Chevallier Guild and Henry Chevallier Guild, supposedly 7 years in the making.  I'll confess that I didn't appreciate it fully when I tried it several weeks ago for the first time.  It wasn't the right occasion.  I had brought over 8 bottles of cider and beer to a friend's.  And when you drink that amount of alcohol over a short period of time, you don't fully remember the depth to which you liked or despised something.

But several nights ago, my wife had some friends over and I served Aspall Premium Cru along with some Brothers ciders.  Premium Cru went perfectly with the Korean food.  Aspall calls it dry and it is.  That's a good thing here.  The sugary sweetness of Brothers Strawberry was cloying once I downed a bottle of Aspall Premium Cru.  In this particular instance, I'd estimate I did drink the entire bottle.  The Korean guests weren't touching it!

If sweet ciders packed with candied flavors are your game, Premium Cru would be like serving the finest Wagyu beef to a kid content with beef jerky.  If you like the natural taste of fruit and have even a minor predilection to ciders, Premium Cru is worth cruising for.
