Green & Black's Butterscotch
Posted: 29 September 2010  Doug's Chocolate Republic  5.0
Green & Black's Were it not for the acceptable 34% milk chocolate in which this "butterscotch" was ensconced -- and the hefty price tag and the fact Aussie Dave had taken the time and care to mail it to me -- this bar would've gotten tossed into the streets where the neighborhood stray dogs could have feasted on it. But I'm kind to animals and would not wish to inflict such torture.

Butterscotch is one of my deep loves.  I prefer it to most of my past girlfriends -- not my current one, of course.  I loved the butterscotch morsels the American branch of Nestle manufactured.  I'd snack on them right out of the bag as a kid and later bake them into cookies using the Nestle Tollhouse recipe minus the chocolate chips.  The obsession has continued into adulthood.  Whenever we visit the local Swensen's for an ice cream sundae, more often than not, I pick the sundaes that are draped in both hot fudge and butterscotch.

So you can imagine when Aussie Dave included a Green & Black's Butterscotch in one of his parcels, I was ecstatic.  It was as if my birthday had come three times that year, without me aging once.   I couldn't contain my excitement.

Until I tasted it.  Then the euphoria died away, mutated into a brief state of denial, and ultimately settled in disgust.

What butterscotch flavor?  I tasted honeycomb, not the butterscotch flavors that titillate my taste buds.  I can imagine founder Craig Sams whispering into my ear, "But this is all natural butterscotch, Doug, made the old fashioned way.  You're too used to the artificial non-organic nonsense."  Maybe I am, but I know and Green & Black's should know what Green & Black customers expect when they see butterscotch on the label.  If this is the taste of all-natural organic butterscotch, give me the artificial pesticide-laden crap any day of the week.  This was marginally better than the ultra cheap Clark Bar I used to get dropped into my bag by the dozens every Halloween.

Were it not for the acceptable 34% milk chocolate in which this "butterscotch" was ensconced -- and the hefty price tag and the fact Aussie Dave had taken the time and care to mail it to me -- this bar would've gotten tossed into the streets where the neighborhood strays dogs could have feasted on it.   But I'm kind to animals and would not wish to inflict such torture.
