Green & Black's Milk Chocolate

Green & Black's At these prices, I can think of other milk chocolate brands I'd be buying before this one. The chocolate had a nice consistency and mouth feel, but there was nothing amazing about it.

After rinsing my mouth out with soap, Dettol, and industrial grade cleaners from sampling Green & Black's Butterscotch, I decided to go back to the basics and try their 34% Milk.  I probably should've tried the Milk first and tasted G & B's milk concoction unadulterated, but the Butterscotch bar grabbed ahold of me.

I have a history with Green & Black's Milk Chocolate.  I discovered the bars sometime around 2003 or 2004 when I was still living in La La Land, California.  There was a Whole Foods Market around the corner from where I lived, and they stocked a variety of Green & Black's bars.  I don't believe I ever tried the Milk on its own, but plenty of their bars in which milk chocolate was a base.  I had fond memories of their almond bar.   When I finally departed from La La Land on September 25, 2005, my Ukrainian neighbor, knowing I loved Green & Black's, gifted me an Almond bar to take on the road.

That was then, this is now.   Fortunes of people and products wax and wane.  Chevy Chase was a big movie star when I was in high school.  Now he's doing cameos in fare starring a hot tub time machine.  Any one remember the Pet Rock?  Though Green & Black's was music to my mouth back in 2005, would it stack up in 2010?

Let's just say it's not on my A-list anymore.  At these prices, I can think of other milk chocolate brands I'd be buying before this one.   The chocolate had a nice consistency and mouth feel, but there was nothing amazing about it.  Amazing was what I remember about Green & Black's back in the mid 2000's.  A lot of stars peak and go down the hill.  G & B's ride was great while it lasted.

So did G & B's change or have my tastes changed?

I'm inclined to go with the former.   Between 2005 and 2008, I wasn't indulging in many premium chocolates that would ascend my chocolate-taster status to celestial levels.  There wasn't a lot to be sampled where I was at those times.  One thing you should understand about me is that I'm remarkably consistent.  If I loved a song in 1981, I continue to love it today.  A chocolate bar that was delivering the goods 5 years ago and was continuing to deliver would have gotten the same enthusiastic response from me now as it did then.

G & B's did go through some major overhauls between my departure from the United States and the present.  Most importantly, they were bought out by Cadbury for £20m in the same sort of grab for artisan chocolate manufacturers that's been going on in the U.S. Of course, everyone promises that everyone's going to benefit, as the corporate HQ starts slashing costs and bringing the new buy into the corporate bureaucracy.  This can be a recipe for disaster -- and for less tasty chocolate.  Now that Kraft owns Cadbury and, hence, G & B's,  it won't be such a shocker in the future to see them creating a new bar stuffed with Kraft's macaroni and cheese.
