Green & Black's White

Green & Black's My girlfriend, the white chocolate lover in our family, didn't feel compelled to snack on this bar as she watched Korean soap opera dramas on KBS World. She reached for kimchi instead. That's not a good sign at all.
Avg price/gram: USD 0.035   Cocoa %: 30  Size: 100g  British chocolate

The descent of Green & Black's from once revered chocolate powerhouse to brand of expensive mediocrity continues with their White bar.  Now, I'll grant that G & B's had a a high bar set for it.  Aussie Dave included this G & B chocolate lightweight in the same parcel as the Lindt Lindor White.  I am not a big fan of white chocolates in general and so wasn't expecting much from any of the whites he included.  Too bad I didn't eat this bar first.  I would've preferred the subsequent tastings to improve, not worsen.

Lindt's Lindor version uses less cocoa butter (29%) than G & B's 30%, yet tastes creamier, smoother, and emanates a richer vanilla scent.  G & B's pulls out the marketing chops by mentioning on their wrapper that the bar is made with "fragrant Madagascar vanilla for a creamy taste."  Let's break that statement down.  Vanilla is renowned for its floral aroma.  It doesn't make things taste creamier.  G & B's fine-sounding phrase has about as much meaning as a computer on its cover sporting "Made with an Intel processor for a more appealing, trendier look."  The Intel processor within has no bearing on how a computer looks on the outside, does it?  Furthermore, the bulk of the most popular subspecies of vanilla, planifolia, is produced in Madagascar as well as Indonesia, 90% of it.   Sorry, Mexico -- you no longer rank as a leading producer.   So if you stop and think about it for a second, nearly every chocolate bar you'd ever buy which claims to add real vanilla to the mix would either be using Madagascan or Indonesian vanilla.  Had the bar instead read "Made with fragrant Indonesian vanilla for a creamy taste," would you care more or less?  Do you know enough about vanilla to know that Madagascan, Indonesian, or whoever's vanilla bean is of better quality than another's?  Of course you don't.   It's more marketing b.s.

I'd be happy to be b.s.'d by G & B's till Hell froze over as long as they were backing up their sweet-sounding marketing dross with succulent-tasting chocolate I could scream about, like they did back in 2004 and 2005.  This bar was a take-it-or-leave-it thing.  If it were sitting open on the table and you were craving white chocolate just as you were passing by, you'd snack on it and not recoil in horror as you did so.  But it doesn't command a taste premium to lure me into a store to shell out hard-earned dough so I could fatten up myself upon it.  Not by a long shot.  The bar lay in our refrigerator for well over a week before it finally got consumed.  A week is a long time over here for a small 100g bar.   My girlfriend, the white chocolate lover in our family, didn't feel compelled to snack on this bar as she watched Korean soap opera dramas on KBS World.  She reached for kimchi instead.  That's not a good sign at all.

You won't be seeing me, my loved ones, or anyone who may have met me in the last year share company with this bar any time soon.
