Green & Black's Dark 70%

Green & Black's If 10 minutes is too much time to spend to find another premium bar to sink your teeth into or if organic chocolate is non-negotiable for you, your money will have been considered acceptably invested by purchasing one of these.
Avg price/gram: USD 0.034   Cocoa %: 70  Size: 100g  British chocolate

70% cocoa solids in one chocolate bar meant for eating!  Can you believe it?  Well, maybe the British couldn't.  According to Green & Black's co-founder, Craig Sams, when the company introduced this 70% bar back in 1991, it was the first ever 70% chocolate bar to be sold in the UK.  He may be right about that.  I know there was a 69% bar available starting in 1969, and some company I can't remember the name of introduced a 70.8% chocolate bar sometime in the 1970's.   Then you had various other percentages like 70.2% and 69.9%, but no one ever thought to bring a bar that had a nice round 70% cocoa solids to the chubby British masses before G & B decided to do it.

The blurb written on the packaging is nearly the identical meaningless hogwash which appeared on their packaging for their white chocolate bar. G & B boast for this one that it's "made with the finest Trinitario cocoa beans for an intense taste."  Predominantly all the cacao in production worldwide since the 1960's has been the forastero or the lower-grade trinitario bean.  So translated into reality:  G & B uses the finest quality lower-grade trinitario beans to create their intense tastes.  Does that sound better?

G & B liked to advertise in its early days that their chocolate was healthier because it used less sugar. All chocoholics know that higher cocoa content chocolates are less sweet than their milk chocolate counterparts.  Any dark chocolate bar with similar cocoa content would have had less sugar than the dregs people pick up in the supermarket checkout aisles.

Okay, enough about G & B's hollow marketing.  How does the 70% bar rank in taste?  The chocolate's consistency and taste is more than acceptable.  This blend, along with the Maya Gold, and the Dark 85% are the best G & B products I've sampled.  In today's chocolate market, if you look around for more than 10 minutes, you can find a dark bar of similar to this one that will leave Green & Black's looking very blue.   If 10 minutes is too much time to spend to find another premium bar to sink your teeth into or if organic chocolate is non-negotiable with you, your money will have been considered acceptably invested by purchasing one of these.
