Whittaker Dark Mocha
Posted: 19 January 2011    8.5
Whittaker Dark Mocha Whittaker's mocha version uses a 62% dark chocolate blend and mixes in 8% roasted coffee beans. This is one of those bars where the coffee beans are ground so fine and infused throughout the chocolate. It's a fantastic blend, and you can justify to yourself as you're getting your caffeine fix that you're also getting all the antioxidant benefits from the high cacao content.  Bad marriages have been justified for lesser reasons.

It's been a long, long time since I've enjoyed a good mocha.  Slightly less than a month ago, I was in Malaysia and visited the Theobroma Chocolate Lounge and ordered a mocha.  Theobroma makes a good product, but the coffee flavor was too sharp in their drink.  There wasn't enough coffee-chocolate balance.

Back in the depressing days when I still lived in California, I used to make my own mochas.  I used unsweetened premium cocoa powder, instant coffee, and soy milk.  Back then, I used to also eat a lot of mocha bars.  I'd swing by Whole Foods and pick up a Scharfen Bergen or a Green & Black's mocha bar several times a week. When you live in a depressing and unsupportive environment, you either eat a lot of chocolate or drink a lot of coffee -- and if you can combine the two into one snack, you consume that.

It was a great blast from my past to rekindle my love of mocha bars when Johnny Oz brought this one over at New Year's.  He knew I loved Whittaker's chocolates.  Former benefactor Aussie Dave sent me plenty of Whittaker bars in the past but he was never able to find a store to stock a mocha.  It could be because Aussie Dive sniffs too much paint thinner.  Johnny Oz located such a store within minutes.  Johnny Oz restricts his abuses to cigarette smoking.

I'm surprised this bar lasted 3 days in my refrigerator.  The next one I get, if I'm ever able to procure another one, will be lucky to last 24 hours.

Whittaker makes dark stuff like dark chocolate with 62% cacao and dark almond in New Zealand. It's New Zealand chocolate through and through. Dark Almond at 62% rocks. Come to the Chocolate Republic with Doug of Doug's Republic
