Amedei Cru Jamaica
Posted: 3 November 2012    5.5
Amedei Cru Jamaica from Italy  Amedei's Cru Jamaica is a single-origin bar from Jamaica containing nothing but cocoa mass, cane sugar, cocoa butter, and vanilla.  Biting into this Amedei Cru Jamaica bar, you could tell, certainly, that your mouth was being entertained by a master. But here at the Chocolate Republic, my mouth from time-to-time bites into other bars of greatness, and my wallet needn't be sucked empty to do it.
Avg price/gram: USD 0.16   Cocoa %: 70  Size: 50g

About a year ago, my most generous chocolate benefactor, Aussie Dave, was sending me news about a new parcel he wanted to send me.  In that parcel, he wanted to include a few Amedei bars.  I'd heard of Amedei through the chocolate grapevine and knew it to be a premium brand and figured it had been around for decades, perhaps a century.  I was off by a large margin.  The Italian chocolate operation has only been around since 1990, set up by the young brother and sister team of Cecilia and Alessio Tessieri. Amedei prides itself on having the world's most expensive chocolate and its chocolate used as an ingredient in the world's most expensive cupcake.

Amedei specializes in organic single origin chocolate bars.  The Chuao, costing USD 0.28/gram, comes from the Chuao peninsula of Venezuela.  Amedei has exclusive access to all the beans grown there, swiping the supply rights out from under French competitor Valrhona.  Another famous bar, the Porcelana, also hails form Venezuela and runs an astounding USD 0.34/gram.

One problem I have with such premium brands is the hype factor.  The chocolate is touted to such heights, it becomes hard for the actual taste to live up to the expectations. Amedei's Cru Jamaica is a single origin bar from Jamaica containing nothing but cocoa mass, cane sugar, cocoa butter, and vanilla.  Biting into this Amedei Cru Jamaica bar, you could tell, certainly, that your mouth was being entertained by a master. But here at the Chocolate Republic, my mouth from time-to-time bites into other bars of greatness, and my wallet needn't be sucked empty to do it.  Witness Willie's Indonesian 69 or Madagascan 71. This is man who lives, breathes, and probably has sex with cacao beans or at least uses them as sexual aids.  His amazing creations cost only USD 0.06/gram.  When I'm paying more than two-and-a-half times Willie's for an Amedei, I want to be blown away.  I was not.

Don't get me wrong.  The Cru Jamaica beans were roasted to perfection  This was several steps up from the typical 70% I'm likely to be able to buy at my local gourmet market.  And that's just it.   Several steps up isn't a staircase up, and that's what I would expect when I'm paying these prices for a brand known throughout the world.

Tasty, but not worth the investment.  What else can I say?  Even if I loved it, I'd be in no shape to continually repurchase it.

Amedei from Italy, founded by the Tessieri siblings, likes it dark. Their Cru Jamaica is solidly dark chocolate and the chocolate republic enjoyed it.
